My boyfriend just broke up with me and now I’m a single mom of two guinea pigs, what do I do?

Monday, November 16th, 2009

I don’t know how to care for them alone. He broke up with me! We were suppose to do this together.

Guinea pigs are great little animals, and they are very easy pets to take care of. I have 3 guinea pigs, and it doesn’t take much work.

Food: Feed your guinea pigs about 1-2 handfuls of high quality guinea pig food 2 times a day. You can just get the food at a pet store. Also, make sure that they have plenty of fresh timothy hay throughout the day. (If your piggies are like mine, though, then the hay will be gone within minutes of you giving it to them.) Give the guinea pigs fresh fruits and vegetables too. They love it, and its really good for them. You can give them broccoli, carrots, spinach, oranges (contain vitamin c, which guinea pigs need) apple cores, almost anything!
Give your guinea pigs fresh water without the vitamin stuff. Though this supplement you put in water sounds good, most guinea pigs don’t like it and will leave the water untouched. This isn’t healthy, so make sure it is clean fresh water with nothing in it.

Socialization: Guinea pigs need plenty of floor time every day to strech their legs and have some fun. An hour a day should be fine. They really enjoy this time and may popcorn around to show you how happy they are. (popcorning is where they jump around). Guinea pigs are great to cuddle when you are watching tv or just hanging out. Also, pet them inside the cage gently without picking them up, especially if they are shy. This will help get them used to you.

Cage: Depending on the size of the cage, it needs to be cleaned every couple of days. The bigger the cage, the longer it can be without being cleaned. You really should consider building your two guinea pigs a large cage. It is inexpensive, it will make your life easier, and your guinea pigs will love it! Go to this website for more great information on why your guinea pigs need a bigger cage, as well as photo galleries and other info: www.cavycages.com.

I have a friend who had 2 guinea pigs. She had to clean her small petstore cage every 2-3 days. I have 3 guinea pigs, and because I built them a larger cage, I can clean mine every 1 1/2 weeks, no problem. I used cavycages to give me ideas.

Each guinea pig should have a hidey house, and there should be an extra. (2 piggies = 3 hidey houses.) They also need room to run. (This is where the big cage comes in, you can’t have all that and room left over in a small cage)

Bedding: Guinea pigs like a nice layer of bedding in the cage. Some people use fleece and have a little area of bedding to go potty, but I don’t know how to potty train guinea pigs, so I just use bedding. The best bedding to use is aspen, pine, or carefresh. Cedar bedding has aromatic oils that are not good for your guinea pigs, so please don’t use it. In the winter and during cold weather, put a little more bedding, about an inch or two deep, so that the guinea pigs can cuddle in there and keep warm.

Cleaning the Cage: To clean the cage, what I do is use a dustpan to pick up all the bedding and put it in a bag. Every once in a while when it is hot out, I will take my cage outside and hose it down to really clean it off. Then I dry it, put a layer of fresh bedding in, put all the hidey houses and bowls back in, and presto! Its really easy this way! Don’t forget to clean out the bowls too. You don’t want your guinea pigs to be eating from a dirty surface.

Lastly, just give them lots of love, and enjoy them! Here is a great website with more information that I like to use: www.cavyspirit.com.

I know that this all sounds kind of overwhelming, but it really isn’t bad. Guinea pigs are great little animals, and I hope you have a lot of fun with them. I wish you the best of luck with your guinea pigs, and I hope I have been able to help you out!

yes my bf fit in to my skinnys (he is not fat)they were to big for me and to big for him (size 7) but still i wanna kno wat i can do with out tlkin to his mom b/c im going to wind up punching her in the face. she is trying to break up the first good relationship ive had in years…i was thinkin about sending her on a guilt trip("breaking up" wit him and then having him act sad around his mom then she asks y and he says coz u took away wat i loved)but i dont rlly think that tht will work she is a crack whore.>:|

as in your bf fit into your skinny jeans??

anyway, to answer your question, if you can, spend more time with the mom and get to know each other better. if you can’t, then just ignore her for the mean time, she will eventually cool down at one point or another.
