Can the Kubler-Ross five stages of grief be applied to unwanted break-ups?

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

There seems to be some resemblance there, although the order seems different, something like Displacement, Denial , Sulking, Anger, and acceptance. What do you think?

It makes total sense that it would.
Although Kubler-Ross’s work is built around the impending loss of one’s OWN life, it would also apply to the loss of a loved one’s life. (Actually, I have been through that and, YES, it DOES apply!) With that in mind, it is not a big stretch to apply it to a loss by separation, as well.
Indeed, ANY sort of a loss (or impending loss) that causes real emotional pain fits within the parameters of such a progression.

Of all the losses we encounter in our lives, the loss of a person – by whatever cause – is the MOST painful, by far!

The usual human range of emotions kind of compares to a high-rise building. The various emotions DO occur in a predictable order, like the order of the floors – "apathy", being the basement, and "pure elation" being the penthouse suite.
However, even though the floors remain in the same place and in the same order from bottom to top and from top to bottom, you can ride the elevator up and down, visiting the floors at random, in any order, and you do not necessarily have to open the elevator door and step out on every floor.

Knowing that you, yourself are going to die soon, knowing that a loved-one is going to die, actually losing a loved-one to death, knowing a break-up is coming, and actually losing a loved-one through separation – these carry a similar load of traumatic grief, but each of those situatins has subtle characteristics the others don’t. Logically, then, each would still effect the emotions a little differently. So there may well be variances in what "floors" your "emotional elevator" would stop on (and in what order) depending on which of these situations is involved.
